Dear Friends and Family,
The response from the community, both in demand for hand sanitizer as well as a desire to help, has been enormous. It is such a privilege to be a part of finding solutions to the COVID-19 pandemic with you all.
We wanted to reach-out with an update on our activities and progress. In the interest of time we are sending one, huge update with information that will apply to some of you, but may be redundant for others so please excuse any duplication in information or communication from us. Going forward, we do not plan to send out big emails like this regarding COVID-19 activities, but instead rely on those who want to stay informed to use the Green Door website and our Facebook page, which we will update regularly.
We appreciate you all. Together we’re Stronger!
The Green Door Team
Donations of Free Green Door Hand Sanitizer
Because of the generosity of many, many organizations and individuals we have been able to commit to donating 1,939 bottles of hand sanitizer to at-risk populations and professionals throughout the Kalamazoo area including
- Meals on Wheels
- Residential Opportunities, Inc.
- 12 Baskets
- Kalamazoo Area Schools
- Family Health Center
We are a small business with limited resources, but we hope to continue to increase the number of donated bottles in the coming days with your help. The best way to support this effort, at the present time, is through monetary donations. If you would like to contribute please visit the Hand Sanitizer Project page of our website and scroll down to the middle of the page.
Purchasing Bottles of Hand Sanitizer
We have also been able to work through the logistics so that organizations and individuals can purchase bottles of hand sanitizer. However, due to process limitations we have had to put the following constraints on orders
- Order minimums of 100 bottles or more
- Purchasers need to pick-up their orders from Green Door’s Kalamazoo, MI production facility or make arrangements for shipping companies to do so for them.
Orders are coming in from hospitals, delivery and logistics companies, as well as every other type of organization you can think of.
Many of you have indicated a desire to purchase small quantities of bottles. Please know that we will continue to work towards reducing these limitations. Updates will be posted to our website and FB page.
For those of you who would like to place orders, please visit the Hand Sanitizer Project page of our website and complete the order form. We can then send you an invoice with payment options of major credit cards or ACH transfers. If you have already placed an order, you do NOT need to resubmit. For those of you who hope to obtain smaller amounts of hand sanitizer we have a few suggestions.
- Coordinate a group buy, amongst each other, by using the #GreenDoorHandSaniGroupBuy hashtag on social media to connect with each other.
- Check with the Kalamazoo Stillhouse. We saw on their Facebook page that they have been able to offer limited quantities of free bottles to the general public.
- Continue to check the Green Door website and Facebook page for changes to our constraints.
Green Door Production Capacity Update
With the help of many throughout the community, we currently have enough bottles, spray tops, labels, ethanol, hydrogen peroxide, glycerol, methane, and heptane on-hand to be able to produce approximately 6,000 bottles of hand sanitizer. At the time of writing, we’ve received orders in excess of 11,500 bottles from organizations throughout the Kalamazoo community. However, this is truly a national shortage as we’ve been receiving inquiries from as far aways as Nevada, Texas, and New York. Our supply-chain team has been burning the candle at both ends and are excited to have found several sources of additional materials with our community’s support. Depending on delivery timelines, production speed should see significant increases next week.
At the time of writing, we have completed over 500 bottles with pickup notifications starting to go out. We have purposefully taken a methodical approach to putting our process in place for the safety of our team and the quality of our finished hand sanitizer. Now that things are rolling we are excited to attack the next week and make efficiency gains.
We are regularly updating the Production Needs section, found at the bottom of the linked page, on our website. If you would like to offer time, resources, or connections, please check back regularly as we will continue to make updates. We fully expect our needs to continue to shift in these unprecedented times.
How can I stay up-to-date?
We plan to move away from email updates in the interest of efficiency. Developments and updates will continue to be posted to the COVID-19 Related Updates page on the Green Door website as well as our Facebook page.
I’ve left voicemails, sent emails, and even Facebook messages, but no one gets back to me. Is there a better way to get your attention?
We are so sorry for the irregularity in our ability to respond. We are trying to keep up, but we are not prioritizing responses to inquiries at this time. The exceptions are to those who order hand sanitizer or from those who can offer donations, support, and expertise that helps us overcome obstacles. Please forgive us and know that we are doing our best. In the interests of everyone’s safety, please do not visit Green Door unless we have asked you to… Well, I guess an exception to that rule was yesterday when Dickey’s Barbeque Pit stopped by with some free chow. Thank you Dickey’s. And thank you #Kalamazoo.
Is there anything else the community can do to help right now?
Yes. If you are able, consider making a donation to our GoFundMe campaign that helps our Tasting Room’s bar staff continue to pay their bills while we remain closed to the public. Also, good news. We are now on a path to giving them hours that aren’t serving drinks, but instead producing hand sanitizer with a raise to try and offset their loss of tips.
What businesses and organizations can the community thank who have actively been supporting this effort?
Black Lab Five, Haviland, One Way Products, Allegra Portage, Damn Handsome Grooming Co., LISC Kalamazoo, and Bell’s Brewery have all been extremely generous and helpful with monetary as well as in-kind donations. Many have also supported us through their expertise in purchasing and sourcing materials. Please share any gratitude you feel towards Green Door with them. We have received generous offers of support from a long list of others who we currently do not need yet, but the encouragement such offers provide us are a huge boost. THANK YOU!!
Before you asked for volunteers to help make deliveries. What changed?
The short answer is, a lot. As we have gotten some days under our belt in this project, we realized that trying to coordinate delivery to dozens, and potentially hundreds, of locations was going to be too much for us to handle. At least from the start. That said, we plan to remain agile and make whatever improvements we can to ensure as much hand sanitizer gets to as many people’s hands as possible.
